A First Timer’s Guide to Laser Hair Removal

first timer guide to laser hair removal

First times are always scary, so it is expected to feel some nerves around your first laser hair removal treatment. Whether you’re waiting for your first treatment or contemplating booking and not sure what to expect in a laser hair removal appointment – we are here for you! This step by step guide will answer all your questions and hopefully help minimize any anxieties you have about your laser appointment.

Talk to our skin specialists

First things first, it is important that when booking in a laser appointment you disclose any medications you’re taking as this may affect if you are able to receive treatments or not.

How do I prepare?

It is key to shave the treatment area 12-24 hours before your appointment.  We also recommend minimizing your exposure to the sun for at least a week prior to your appointment. As well as removing all fake tan residue.

What should I wear?

It is important on the day of your treatment you are comfortable and that the treatment area is easily accessible. If you’re getting your underarms done, a singlet top or shirt that has sleeves that are easy to move around is recommended. Alternatively, if you’re having a brazilian or bikini treatment we highly suggest a dress or skirt to make the treatment more comfortable afterwards.

What happens when I’m there?

One of our skin specialists will greet you and take you into one of our treatment rooms. From there if it is your first time they will talk you through the machine and how it works. If you are needing to undress they will leave the room for you as well as providing you with a wipe to remove any creams or deodorants from the treatment area.

After knocking they will reenter the treatment room and  hand you some funky glasses to put on to keep your eyes protected during your treatment. From there our skin specialist will begin your treatment, it is important you let them know if it is too painful or you want to stop. You are always in control in our treatment rooms.

Our skin specialists will let you know when your treatment is finished and that you may take your glasses off. They will again leave the room, this is when you can apply some aftercare cream to the area and then continue getting dressed. Then you can meet one of the girls at reception and organize your next treatment.

What aftercare is involved?

We highly recommend the use of  Aspect Dr. Soothing Gel OR Skin Simple Post Laser Soothing Gel to help reduce any adverse responses and to soothe and calm the skin. It is also important to exfoliate around the 5-7 days post treatment, and repeat the process every 1-2 weeks thereafter.

When will I need to come back?

Upkeep for laser hair removal is generally recommended every 4-6 weeks however this may differ depending on the area treated and the hair type. This will gradually decrease the more treatments you do.

So good luck on your first appointment! We can’t wait to see you and your silky smooth results. We hope to see you in our clinic soon and stay tuned for more treatment guides.
