Treatment Care Guidelines
Pre-Care / Post-Care Guidance
- Limit sun exposure, as excess UV may increase pigmentation risk
- Pause retinoids, AHAs, and BHAs for a few days, as advised by your clinician
- Keep the skin well-hydrated with gentle products
- Avoid physical and chemical exfoliants during the treatment week
- Avoid sun exposure, heat, sweating, waxing, and active skincare (retinoids, acids) for the first 2–4 weeks; strictly use SPF 30+ daily.
- Stay well-hydrated, allow natural skin peeling without picking, and attend your follow-up at 4–6 weeks to assess progress.
Cosmelan is a professional depigmentation treatment, and as with any active skin treatment, there are effects and risks you should be aware of before proceeding.
Possible effects following treatment may include:
- Redness and skin sensitivity — Redness, warmth, and increased skin sensitivity are common in the days following treatment. These effects are part of the skin’s natural response and typically subside as the skin adjusts.
- Dryness, flaking, and peeling — Skin peeling and flaking is an expected part of the treatment process as surface skin cells shed. This varies between individuals in terms of intensity and duration. It is important not to pick or forcibly remove peeling skin, as this may affect healing.
- Swelling or tightness — Mild swelling or a sensation of tightness in the treated area may occur and generally resolves within a few days.
- Itching or irritation — Some individuals may experience itching or irritation during the peeling phase. If discomfort is significant or persistent, contact your treating clinician.
- Temporary darkening of pigmentation — In some individuals, pigmented areas may appear temporarily darker before improvement becomes visible. This is a known response to active depigmentation treatment and should be discussed with your clinician.
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) — There is a risk of developing new pigmentation as a result of skin irritation or inflammation, particularly in individuals with medium to deeper skin tones. Sun protection and adherence to aftercare instructions are essential in minimising this risk.
- Prolonged redness or persistent skin sensitivity — In some cases, sensitivity and redness may last longer than expected. Individual responses vary depending on skin type, condition, and aftercare compliance.
- Allergic or adverse skin reactions — Although uncommon, some individuals may experience an adverse reaction to treatment ingredients. If you develop unexpected swelling, hives, severe burning, or signs of an allergic response, seek medical advice promptly.
- Incomplete or variable pigmentation improvement — Results vary significantly between individuals depending on pigmentation type, depth, skin tone, and compliance with the home care program. Not all pigmentation concerns will respond equally, and further treatment sessions may be discussed following clinical review.
